Fit for a Viet

I haven’t taken photos in soo damn long. I’m about to package my camera and send it off to get some things recalibrated, it’s acting so damn goofy.

On the brighter side, I’ve been taking care of my car, which makes me very happy.
I introduced a clay bar to it, waxed it, and today I took off my bumper and headlights, baked my headlight so I could pry it apart, blacked out the housings, and put some yellow Lamin-X on my fog lights.

Such a productive day.

More to be had very soon. Waiting on an HID retrofit to come into the mail.

May the 4th Be With You

I took this photo awhile back for one of my projects here at KU. It was a photo assignment to shoot “high key” images. So with high key, comes white clothing, backdrops, and accessories, and with that leads white walls, window lighting, and stormtroopers, obviously.

Since it is May 4th, and since I am a huuuge Star Wars dork, I am wishing all of you, a happy fourth, a happy Star Wars Day.
May the 4th be with you.

Hawk Mud Fest 2012

Today was an interesting day. I received a call from my photo editor of the University Daily Kansan. She told me to go cover mud volleyball. That’s right. It was the Hawk Mud Fest Volleyball Tournament. Mud. Volleyball.
What else do I need to say? Unfortunately I was short on time so I only covered two teams closely, Team “Sets from Behind” and Team “How I Set Your Mother.”

Screamin’

For some reason I have always had this fascination of photos of people screaming. There’s a set in particular that I saw a long while ago taken by photographer Brian Barrera. His set of screams are absolutely amazing to me with stretched proportions on the eyes and mouth.

Tonight I set up a make-shift studio in my bedroom. Things barely fit. I live in a small college apartment, sleeping on a twin sized bed on some bed risers and a crummy support of a frame. So I put my bed up, set up a backdrop and my B1600 and took photos of myself screaming at nothing.

Light Setup

B1600 Camera Right and high
Shot through 47″ Octabox @ 1/32nd Power
Triggered via Cybersyncs

D700, 50mm, ND4 Filter.

New Orleans Exploration: Day 1

Arrival from New Orleans from Houston Texas. The first thing we did was grab a cab from the airport to our hotel, The Mariott on Canal Street. We rested up at the hotel for a little and explored Bourbon Street for awhile. We were all a bit exhausted so I didn’t end up taking to many photos.

Part One - New Orleans : Travels

I’m a small town kid at heart and I haven’t experienced the world at all. This was my first experience with street venders and hustlers. I’ve never seen anything like it before so I found them very interesting subjects. This guy was amazingly drunk and was laying on the ground. Started playing with the dog that stood over him and I’m surprised the dog didn’t retaliate. The drunk guy said something about wanting to the milk the dog. I simply snapped some photos, laughed, and went on.This guy was going around and selling flowers. Though I didn’t realize it at the time I took this photo. I thought he was waiting around for someone he had been creepily stalking. I saw him standing around and it looked like he was looking for someone. I snapped a few photos then he turned around and went into a strip club. It wasn’t until I saw him a different day that I realized he was selling flowers. Strange either way. This guy cracked me up. New Orlean’s own, “The Riddler.” The man told me a few clever riddles I’ve never heard before and if he wanted me to proceed I had to pay him a dollar. Unfortunately, I didn’t carry cash on me the whole trip.

This brings us to the end of our day. We were exhausted and we had to cover KU’s press conference about the game against Ohio State in the Final Four Championship.

Easter with Mirm

On Easter Sunday I went over and spent time with my best friend and fellow photographer, Miriam Franz. She found some fake glasses in my car and put them on and I couldn’t help but want to take photos.

Good thing I always have my gear on me! I used the modeling light for by B1600 mono block and diffused it with a 47″ octabox. Didn’t use the flash because I wanted to open up my aperture and I didn’t want to flash Mirm blind since the sun was completely gone and the mono block was my only source of light.

New Orleans : Travels

On Monday night, March 26th, 2012, I got a call, right before one of my classes at KU, from my photo editor of the University Daily Kansan, my boss and friend, Jessica Janasz. She told me I was going to New Orleans to cover the NCAA Final Four Tournament and I have until Wednesday afternoon to get everything ready and clear everything up with my instructors about missing class.

I don’t think I’ve ever been so thrilled in my life. I am a 22-year-old Asian and I am going to shoot the NCAA Final Four Tournament alongside photographers from Sports Illustrated, Getty Images, USA Today, and a lot more big names out there.

These images were all taken on Wednesday, afternoon, March 27th. It is a documentation from my Travels from Kansas City to Houston. The gentleman in the blue polo is UDK’s sports writer Mike Vernon, the guy in the cap is UDK’s photographer Chris Neal, and the man in the stripes is sports editor Max Rothman.

KANSAS CITY

I don’t fly that often so I took a lot of photos out of the window like a typical tourist. Being completely immersed inside of a cloud is an experience I found quite amazing.

Flying over Houston.

Something about this guy intrigued me a lot. I saw him when we got out of our terminal in Houston and I really wanted to know who the balloons were for and I really wanted to stick around to see what happen when he met whoever he was suppose to meet with. Unfortunately I was with three other people and we were on a schedule, so no camping out for this Asian.

We went out of the airport in Texas to go grab some Tex Mex food.

And this is where we ended up. Amazingly tasty food.

While we were waiting for our food I noticed a few older gents across the way. They were all talking and laughing, and each one had a cigar. It was hard to resist taking photos of their “baller-ness.”

By this point it was right before midnight. It was the last photo I took during my travel from Kansas City to Dallas. After this flight from Dallas to New Orleans I was amazingly tired. When we showed up to New Orleans we all freshened up and hit the streets to go site seeing. Those photos? Coming soon for sure.

Coming Soon – New Orleans Photo Series

I have a ton of images on my computer that I need to sift through. I’ll be posting about 4 different days worth of images in different posts. Basically just my personal and work related documentation of my travel to New Orleans for the first time to shoot the NCAA Final Four.

Coming soon.

Out with the Old, in with the New…

I have gone through a lot of different changes with this site. I started this up when I was a senior in high school, almost four years ago. So many different changes, so many tacky designs, so many bad photographs.

It’s interesting to look back on how much my taste has changed as far as what looks nice and what doesn’t. I use to think the tackiest effects were so cool.

My site was hacked awhile ago. So I decided to erase everything and start completely over. Who knows, maybe I’ll find that this design later down the road is just as stupid as the earlier ones.

Definitely look around, tell me what works, what doesn’t, what you like and don’t like.

I’m continuing the idea of “findings” and “friends” from my last blog if any of you are familiar with that.
Definitely come back for the “findings” section and I could use some submissions for them as well!

If you’re an artist and we’ve met, hit me up so I can put you on the “friends” tab, especially if you don’t currently have a dedicated website.
I just want to give my friends some representation on the web and the “friends” tab will definitely lead everyone to everything you are currently working with on the world wide web.

Anyway, I am exhausted. This creation took longer than I thought, and I didn’t even do that much.

Happy Shootings.
-Travis Young
